Preview: Argentina vs Algeria prediction, odds, where to watch, time | FIFA World Cup 2026

Algeria will face Argentina for the first time in a competitive game at the FIFA World Cup.

Defending champion Argentina are all set to start their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign against Algeria. The game will be played at the Kansas City Stadium in Missouri on Tuesday, June 16. Both sides are drawn in Group J alongside Austria and Jordan.

Argentina secured direct qualification for the FIFA World Cup by finishing in the top six in the CONMEBOL round-robin qualifiers. They were the first South American team to qualify and eventually won the group with 38 points.

Lionel Scaloni’s side haven’t lost a single game in their last five matches, and a similar winning streak is required if they are to become the first team since Brazil in 1962 to retain the World Cup.

Additionally, Lionel Messi needs only four more goals to surpass Miroslav Klose’s record of most goals in the competition. The Argentine playmaker already holds the record for most appearances in the tournament, 26.

On the other hand, Algeria secured a berth in the competition by winning Group G in the Confederation of African Football (CAF) preliminaries. Mohamed Amine Amoura was Algeria’s breakthrough star in the qualifiers, scoring 10 goals.

They have qualified for the summer competition for the fifth time and for the first time since 2014. Algeria’s best performance also came in 2014, when they reached the round of 16, losing to eventual champions Germany.
