Why Chelsea players frequently receive yellow cards?
The Blues’ players have received the most yellow cards this season.
After receiving an incredible 27 yellow cards in their first seven games, Chelsea are poised to break their own unusual Premier League record.
If they keep up their current pace, Chelsea will end the league campaign with just over 146 bookings, as Enzo Maresca’s club is averaging nearly four yellow cards per game.
Chelsea finished the last season with 105 yellow cards, four higher than previous record-holder Leeds United, setting a Premier League mark for bookings throughout the season.
After becoming the first players in the league to receive five yellow cards, Marc Cucurella and Wesley Fofana are going to be punished for Chelsea’s upcoming match against Liverpool after the international break.
The FA will also fine the team £50,000 for receiving six or more yellow cards against Nottingham Forest, which is the second time this season that they have done so after they did the same against Bournemouth.
The most yellow cards 14 in Premier League history were shown during Chelsea’s victory over Bournemouth in September. Six of them were given to the visitors.
Why are Chelsea players often being booked?
All three of Cole Palmer’s yellow cards this season have been due to dissent, while 11 of Chelsea’s 27 yellow cards have come for non-fouls, according to statistics given by Opta. Although all five of Fofana’s bookings have been for fouls, two of Cucurella’s five have been for disputing and dissent.
With 13 players booked overall this season, Chelsea have three more cautions than Manchester United, who have the second-highest number. Chelsea haven’t had a player sent off this season, in contrast to United.
If a player receives five yellow cards in the first 19 league games, they are suspended for one match; if they receive ten bookings up through and including the 32nd game of the season, they are suspended for two matches.
A player will receive a three-game suspension if they receive 15 bookings in a season, which has never happened.
In the Premier League standings, Chelsea are presently ranked fourth. This season, rivals Manchester City, Arsenal, Liverpool, Aston Villa, Tottenham, and Newcastle United have each recorded fewer than 20 bookings.
