Why was Djed Spence picked by Thomas Tuchel for England's World Cup squad?

Only one English player from Tottenham Hotspur, Djed Spence, has received a call-up.

There is so much talent in England, but it is mandatory to take only a 26-man squad to the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Thomas Tuchel has now announced the final names that are going to represent the Three Lions at the upcoming edition of the mega competition.

Stars like Ivan Toney and Djed Spence received the surprising call-ups. Many big names like Harry Maguire, Phil Foden, Cole Palmer and Trent Alexander-Arnold were omitted. Harry Kane is set to lead the England national football team at FIFA’s flagship tournament, which is all set to take place in Canada, Mexico and the USA.

A total of 21 players in the final squad for the Three Lions are from the Premier League. While some of them have their national team experience, for others, it is going to be the first time at the grandest stage of them all.

England’s final 26-man squad consists of many youth players and some experienced stars. It is going to be interesting to see their performances. Thomas Tuchel’s men are going to face New Zealand and Costa Rica in friendly games before the FIFA World Cup 2026.

Why was Djed Spence picked by Thomas Tuchel?

Instead of opting for Real Madrid’s Trent Alexander-Arnold, England’s head coach has called up Tottenham Hotspur’s Djed Spence. On why he selected the 25-year-old, Thomas Tuchel mentioned that he is the quickest player in the squad and loves defending.

During the recent conference, Tuchel said, “I think from day one we were very clear that we are trying to select and build the best possible team, which is not necessarily to select and collect the 26 most talented players.”

“I can assure every fan in the country that we have 26, 100% committed players in camp with us who know their role, who are ready to buy into their role on and off the pitch and are ready and committed to the idea of team spirit and being unselfish,” England’s head coach said further.
