Will Alexander Isak play for Newcastle United against Fulham in Premier League?
The Magpies could miss two crucial players for their visit to Craven Cottage.
Newcastle United have started dealing with new injuries. They could miss Alexander Isak in their Premier League game against Fulham after the forward damaged his eye by a clearance from Craig Dawson. Later Isak injured his foot towards the end of the first half at Molineux against Wolves.
However, he is not fully ruled out. Manager Eddie Howe is yet to give a clear update on the former Real Sociedad player. Meanwhile, another attacking player Callum Wilson has been ruled out until the next international break.
“We’ll find out more with Alex today,” said Howe. “It was a strange one with his eye – the ball just grazed his eye and we felt, at that time, that was the main reason for him coming off the pitch. But then he had a knock to his foot as well, so he’s got a combination of the two.
“Both were picked up towards the end of the half at Wolves, and we’ll make a decision when we see how things are later today.”
Isak’s absence for the next Newcastle United match might have been a little less worrisome had Wilson been available. The former Bournemouth striker’s comeback from a combination of hamstring and back issues is scheduled to be next month.
Wilson had to undergo more scans. It was expected he would be available for their next game. Newcastle’s medical team has extended his return date until the next international break in mid-October after a new series of scans.
“Callum won’t make the game,” said the Magpies boss Eddie Howe. “With Callum, we’re looking at a situation where we’re hoping to have him back in full training by the next international break, ready for the games following.
“Any injury to the hamstring is potentially complex. The back injury is there, but it was connected (to the hamstring issues). There’s been no re-injury, it’s just been a case of readjusting the timescales depending on how he felt. We’ve had to listen to his body when he’s delivered the work, and he’s also been rescanned.
“It’s maybe not healed as quickly as we’d hoped, so there’s been a slight adjustment, but hopefully we’ll have him back fully fit and firing for the next group of games. That will be really important because we have missed him. We’ve really missed his energy and what he brings to the squad, and we’ve missed the competition that he brings.”
