Argentina will host Peru in their last international game of the year.

Argentina will play their last 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier of 2024 tonight and will hope to reinforce their first spot after losing to Paraguay 2-1.

It was a shocking defeat for Lionel Scaloni’s side, given that the South American giants have been in hot form and are top of the qualifying table.

Now they will hope to bounce back when they host Peru and extend their lead at the top of the table. Argentina have not lived up to their mark so far. In their last six matches, they have only three wins, with two defeats and a draw.

Scaloni’s side will have to step up in big matches if they are to maintain their top spot in the standings. The 2022 World Cup-winning coach should deploy his strong lineup in order to wrap up this year’s international break with a win.

Will Lionel Messi play tonight?

One of the big names is certainly going to be Lionel Messi, who scored a hat-trick in the October break against Bolivia but failed to get on the scoresheet against Paraguay.

This will be Messi’s last game of the year. He won’t be back in action until Inter Miami’s next game given the Herons were eliminated in the MLS Cup playoffs against Atlanta United.

Fans will hope to see their little magician make a big impact in his last game of 2024 to help Argentina to a convincing win as so far the South American side have struggled to put an impressive performance against a top side.

Messi at 37 has continued to be the key man who controls the flow of the game from midfield and also makes sure he or someone else (via assist) gets on the scoresheet. He will hope to make amends for his poor outings in their first game of the November international break.

Considering Peru have won only once in their last 11 matches, this will be a massive chance for the hosts to capitalize on their sluggish run in the qualifying stage.
