Variety and Sportico announced on Monday that actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, owners of Wrexham AFC, have acquired a minority stake in Liga MX team Club Necaxa.

The two join NFL quarterback Odell Beckham Jr., actress Eva Longoria, pitcher Justin Verlander of the Houston Astros, model Kate Upton, and other well-known minority owners.

The RR McReynolds Company’s involvement in Necaxa is unknown, but it is anticipated that the two will bring numerous of characteristics that have helped the Welsh team Wrexham become a global brand. This includes pending rights issues with the Club Necaxa’s airing collaborators, a possible docuseries that would be similar to Welcome to Wrexham.

Up until 2023, Liga MX, the highest division in Mexico, was the biggest football draw in the United States. Although Liga MX continues to attract TV viewers comparable to the greatest Premier League fixtures, the Premier League has since surpassed the Mexican league as the most frequently viewed league in the US.

With 2.3 million viewers in the US, the 2023 Apertura final between América and Tigres had the same viewership as a Premier League match in the previous campaign between Manchester United and Liverpool.

Liga MX now ranks second in the US audience positions, behind Major League Soccer and the Bundesliga, the German top flight, due to the Premier League’s development.

Founded in Aguascalientes, Club Necaxa has been around for more than a century. According to the sources, a consortium led by Americans Al Tylis and Sam Porter purchased a 50% share in the club in 2021. Later that year, further investors joined, contributing a stake valued at over $200 million. According to Sportico, Reynolds and McElhenney are joining that group.

Following the McElhenney-Reynolds acquisition in February 2021, the two have helped Wrexham gain international recognition. The FX programme, which has already aired two seasons and will debut a third in May, has won five Emmys, including Best Unscripted Reality Programme.
