The French star has scored 14 goals this season.
Xabi Alonso offered a concerning injury update on Kylian Mbappe, who scored a goal in Real Madrid’s 3-1 victory against Villarreal as Los Blancos reclaimed the top spot momentarily.
Despite the win, the team suffered an injury scare after Mbappe was seen holding his ankle following a foul. After the game, Alonso provided an update on whether the Frenchman has picked up a serious ailment.
Alonso reveals why he subbed off Mbappe & Mastanuono
Mbappe and Franco Mastanuono were both substituted out during the second half against Villarreal due to injuries, according to Alonso.
“Kylian had a discomfort in his ankle and Franco has an overload in his hamstring. We will continue the progression with their national teams. We can’t say if (Mbappe) will go with France or not, they will have to evaluate him in their national team. If it gets complicated, he won’t be able to play, but now we can’t say anything.”
According to Xabi Alonso’s comments, both stars have suffered minor discomfort and may undergo a scan before joining their national team for the October international break.
Alonso replaced both players as a precautionary measure, as he felt both players had picked up a knock and taking them off was an ideal decision by the manager.
If the 26-year-old has sustained an injury, then he is likely to miss France’s 2026 World Cup qualifiers games this month, while Mastanuono will also be omitted from the Argentina squad.
Meanwhile, Kylian Mbappe has been sensational this campaign as well, recording 14 goals across all competitions. He has been on a scoring spree and will continue his impressive form when club football returns. For now, Madrid will assess whether the forward has any injury.
Alonso’s side will remain on top of the table if Barcelona lose their game against Sevilla today.
Has Mbappe suffered any injury?
No, he had discomfort in his ankle and was subbed off.
Why was he subbed off?
