Liverpool handed huge blow as Xabi Alonso set to stay another season at Bayer Leverkusen

Alonso’s Leverkusen are on course to win the Bundesliga this season
Liverpool believe Xabi Alonso will remain at Bayer Leverkusen for at least another season, thus the club are prepared to abandon their endeavour to appoint him.
It appears that Alonso will win the Bundesliga with Leverkusen, and it is anticipated that the Spaniard will stick around for their Champions League run next season.
As they make plans for Jürgen Klopp’s replacement, the Reds will instead focus on the Brighton boss, Roberto De Zerbi, and the Sporting head coach, Rúben Amorim.
Fans of Liverpool who had been counting on Alonso to succeed Klopp are devastated by the timing. For Richard Hughes, the newly hired sporting director, and Michael Edwards, the new CEO of Fenway Sports Group, it also presents a big obstacle.
When questioned about the Spaniard’s guiding record thus far, even Klopp seems to grasp that Alonso was the fan’s first pick.
“The next generation is already there and I would say Xabi is the standout in that department,” the Liverpool manager said. “A former world-class player, obviously coaching family as well which helps a little bit. He was like a coach already when he was playing.

“The football he is playing, the teams he sets up, the transfers he did – it was absolutely exceptional. Obviously when you look through the Europa League, Leverkusen is one of the favourites there as well so that could be the season for Leverkusen. Really crazy.”
Alonso was being pursued by Liverpool from Munich, but it appears the 42-year-old is focused on continuing to build on his accomplishments with Leverkusen, who have put them 10 points ahead of Bayern during an undefeated season.
With Thomas Tuchel set to leave Bayern in the summer, the team is looking for an alternative head coach. They want to entice the former midfield player who played at both the Allianz Arena and Anfield. But it appears that Alonso’s team has made it clear that now is not the appropriate moment to move on. Uli Hoeness, the honorary president of Bayern, stated on Thursday that getting his name on anything would be “impossible.”
“We’ll have to see if we can do it this year,” he said. “It will be difficult, if not probably impossible.
“[Alonso] is more inclined to stay at Bayer Leverkusen in view of their current successes, because he would not want to leave them behind,” Hoeness said. “Let’s say if he had two or three more years of success, it would probably be easier to bring him out of there.”
