Top five youngest African goalscorers in FIFA World Cup ft. Ibrahim Mbaye

PSG young sensation Mbaye becomes the youngest African goalscorer in the World Cup.

FIFA World Cup 2026 is underway. There have been over 50 goals already scored across 18 matches played so far in the tournament. We already witnessed some big upsets, whether it be Australia beating prime Turkiye or debutant Cape Verde holding European champions Spain to a goalless draw.

African nations also kick-started the tournament really well. Reigning AFCON Champions Morocco held the most successful team in World Cup history, Brazil, to a 1-1 draw.

Ivory Coast went on to score and win against Ecuador, one of the best defensive teams. Seven-time African champions Egypt held Belgium to a 1-1draw.

The FIFA World Cup belongs to dreamers. It lends its stage to teenagers who dare to dream a little louder. Whether it be teenage sensation Kylian Mbappe scoring against Croatia in the 2018 finals or a 17-year-old Pele announcing himself to the world for Brazil in 1958. The world has bowed down to the valour of youngsters.

As Senegalese forward Ibrahim Mbaye scored against France last night, he has become the youngest African goalscorer in FIFA World Cup history.

In this article, we take a closer look at some of the youngest African players to ever score in the FIFA World Cup.

5. Asamoah Gyan (Ghana) – 20 years, 6 months & 26 days

Niedersachsenstadion in Hanover, Germany, hosted the second group stage game of the FIFA World Cup 2006 between Ghana and Czechia. Debutants Ghana were coming after a defeat to Italy in the opening matchweek. Czechia were coming after a 3-0 win over USA.

Much to everyone’s surprise, young Asamoah Gyan scored the first-ever World Cup goal for Ghana in just two minutes, beating the legendary Peter Cech. Ghana went on to win the game 2-0. They also defeated the USA in the last game to advance past the group stage alongside eventual champions Italy.

4. Julius Aghahowa (Nigeria) – 20 years, 3 months & 26 days

It was the 2002 FIFA World Cup when Nigeria were drawn alongside England, Argentina and Sweden in the Group of Death. Nigeria were coming after a 1-0 defeat to Argentina. The next game against Sweden was a must-win.

The Wing Stadium in Kobe hosted the match. The Super Eagles surprisingly drew first blood after Agahowa became Nigeria’s youngest goal scorer in World Cup history. Sweden scored two later to win the game 2-1.

That goal was the only Nigerian goal in the World Cup 2002.

3. Draman Haminu (Ghana) – 20 years, 2 months & 21 days

Ghana’s maiden World Cup campaign was nothing less than a historic occasion. 20-year-old Gyan scored against Peter Cech’s Czechia to keep knockout hopes alive. The next game against the United States was also a must-win game for them.

22 minutes into the game, Haminu went on to break the deadlock for Ghana. He gave them a decisive lead. It was a thriller of a game as Dempsey equalised in the 43rd minute.

But a late penalty goal from Stephen Appiah saw Ghana win 2-1 against the USA.

2. Moussa Wagué (Senegal) – 19 years, 8 months & 20 days

Senegal were coming after a 2-1 win over European outfit Poland in their opening encounter of the FIFA World Cup 2018. That performance grabbed a lot of eyeballs. In the next game against Japan, the score was levelled at 1- 1, and 20 minutes were left.

Moussa Wague produced a moment of brilliance and scored as the youngest player for Senegal in World Cup history. He went on to make the score 2-1. The game, however, ended in a 2-2 draw after Japan also equalised via Honda’s goal

1. Ibrahim Mbaye (Senegal) – 18 years, 4 months & 23 days

It was the first game in the Group of Death in the FIFA World Cup 2026. Senegal were up against European heavyweights and favourites, France. The game had no goals until the first 45 minutes.

Later, Mbappe and Barcola made it 2-0 for France. In the dying minutes of the game, when everyone lost hope, young Mbaye of PSG went on to beat Wague’s youngest goalscoring record to become Africa’s youngest goal scorer in FIFA World Cup history.

The game however, ended with France winning it 3-1.
