Formula 1: Top three favourites to win Canadian GP 2023
Red Bull's Verstappen will aim to rewrite the record books after a stunning start to the season.
It’s no secret that the Canadian GP is one of the most exhilarating races of the year, thanks in part due to the fast corners and challenging layout. Although smog-related issues due to rampant wildfires have been plaguing all of Canada for the past week, the 52nd Canadian Grand Prix promises to deliver excitement, with teams introducing significant upgrades to their cars.
Now, let’s take a closer look at the favourites to claim victory in the Canadian GP 2023.
3. Lewis Hamilton
Lewis Hamilton’s record at the Canadian GP is nothing short of spectacular, as the British driver is currently tied with Michael Schumacher for the most wins at the circuit. And although Mercedes has struggled with performance this year, the upgrades introduced at the Spanish GP seemed to have paid off, as both Mercedes drivers finished on the podium for the first time this year.
Despite his team boss Toto Wolff tempering expectations due to the track’s characteristics not favouring Mercedes’ W14 car, Hamilton’s track record suggests that fans could once again witness an exciting battle between Verstappen and Hamilton.
2. Fernando Alonso
It’s no surprise that the Spanish GP was a forgettable one for Alonso and his team, as an incident in Q1 hindered his chances of fighting for a podium, and Mercedes took away the second spot in the constructor’s leaderboard.
However, with Mike Krack confirming significant upgrades to the car and the added advantage of owner Lawrence Stroll and his son Lance Stroll’s home support, the team is hopeful for a strong finish. While Alonso has been consistent in fighting for podiums, Lawrence Stroll and Mike Krack believe that with the new updates, both their drivers will be competing for pole position. And with Alonso’s sheer pace, he could very well challenge Max if the updates prove successful.
1. Max Verstappen
Max Verstappen has been a formidable force at Red Bull, winning five out of the seven races held this year. Although his teammate Sergio Perez has also won two races, the gap between the two drivers stands at 52 points, and Max aims to extend his lead by securing Red Bull’s 100th victory in this race. During an interview, Verstappen reminisced about his pole position start last year and expressed hopes of replicating the same success this weekend.
The stage is set for the 52nd Canadian Grand Prix, and the excitement and anticipation among fans and teams are palpable. Whether Verstappen can secure Red Bull’s 100th victory or other drivers will spoil their celebrations, F1 fans can surely expect an exhilarating race.
