Set for next year’s launch!

Sony reassured players that Marathon, Bungie’s upcoming extraction shooter, will still be available by March 31, 2026, the end of its current fiscal year.

This latest update came during Sony’s latest earnings Q&A, where an investor just cleared the game status and some rumors surrounding the game.

Sony’s commitment to Marathon

Sony’s CFO, Lin Tao, has recently addressed the query and reconfirms that the release remains on the next release schedule without any further delays.

This is what Tao has to say about the game, according to Gamespot:

“We are fixing the issues, and we believe this launch will happen. If canceled, we’d need to revise the valuation, but that’s not expected now,”

This follows a rough route, including a plagiarism problem with artist Fern “Antireal” Hook, which Bungie openly addressed.

Reasons behind the delay

Bungie’s Marathon was pushed back to the next year due to the plagiarism scandal and poor alpha reception it received from the players and fans.

In a community post, the studio said:

“The Alpha gave us a chance to refine the game, focusing on survival tension, rich lore, raid-like challenges, and our signature FPS combat.”

They’re using the extra time to respond to user input and strengthen developer-player ties, as outlined on Bungie’s website.

Final Thoughts

The plagiarism scandal really hurt the game a lot. They not only received a lot of hate from the players and gamers online, but there were so many memes that hurt Bungie’s reputation.

This is also not the first time that Bungie has been involved in a plagiarism scandal. Also, there was not a very good reception from the players on the Alpha test. The feedback was mostly negative and bland when it came to gameplay or any lore.

It’s a good decision from Bungie and Sony to delay Marathon further. It would be interesting to see how Bungie can now improve the game. It would be very hard to win the fans’ hearts back with Marathon.
