Doom The Dark Ages runs best on Xbox Series X: Report

Doom fans are pretty excited for Doom The Dark Ages, which is all set to launch on May 15, 2025. Recently, Digital Foundry’s technical analysis revealed that the game runs best on Xbox Series X.

Despite the PS5 Pro’s mid-generation hardware upgrade, the Xbox Series X provides the smoothest experience, even outperforming Sony’s improved machine. Let’s check out more details in this article.

Xbox Series X: The performance king

According to Digital Foundry’s Oliver Mackenzie, Doom: The Dark Ages aims at 60 FPS across all platforms, however, the Xbox Series X maintains a nearly-locked 60 FPS even during violent action scenes.

Both Xbox Series X and PS5 use dynamic 1440p resolution, dropping to 1080p in demanding areas, with variable rate shading (VRS).

However, the PS5 has somewhat lower resolutions and frequent frame-rate drops into the low 50s during intense battles.

The Xbox Series X’s stability provides it a distinct advantage, with Oliver reporting no frame drops during his gameplay, but slight dips may occur afterward.

PS5 Pro: Higher resolution, minor dips

Sony’s PS5 Pro pushes a dynamic 1800p resolution (dropping to 1296p). This offers sharper visuals and reduced VRS artifacts compared to the PS5’s 1440p.

It also enhances anisotropic filtering and drawing distance. However, it still has slight frame-rate reductions to 54-55 FPS during difficult combat, falling short of the Xbox Series X’s stability.

The PS5 Pro’s $699 price tag and 67% more compute units promised a performance boost, but the Xbox Series X, priced at $499, outperformed it in Doom The Dark Ages.

Given Microsoft’s ownership of id Software, this is a noteworthy Bethesda title. Patches may fix PS5 and PS5 Pro performance issues, but the Xbox Series X, which is accessible on Game Pass from day one, presently provides the finest platform experience for Doom The Dark Ages.
