Hints about the new game
Currently, the fans and the whole community are very thrilled that a new creation from Markus “Notch” Persson, Minecraft 2 might be the next big thing.
After a decade of selling Mojang Studios to Microsoft, Notch has returned to X to discuss the possibility of a spiritual successor to the game that has won the hearts of over 200 million players worldwide.
Spiritual successor Minecraft 2
Notch recently revealed on X about his interest in the new project where he wants to blend the elements of traditional roguelikes with a tile-based, first-person dungeon crawler.
However, he is also interested in what he calls a “spiritual successor thing” to Minecraft. In response to this question, an overwhelming 75% of nearly 180,000 participants in a poll on X voted for a Minecraft 2-like experience.
But the main question that arises is whether Notch can create a Minecraft 2 or not. Notch cannot legally build a direct sequel because Microsoft owns the intellectual property rights to Minecraft following their 2014 acquisition of Mojang for $2.5 billion. However, he is open to the concept of developing a game with identical mechanics but a different name and location.
He also hinted about a potential collaboration with Microsoft. Notch is willing to share his project with them emphasizing his sincerity in such an endeavor.
This willingness to collaborate with Microsoft again may pave the door for a new game that, although not formally Minecraft 2, captures the essence of the original.

This is still a very early phase and we don’t know how Microsoft is going to respond. If they agree to his terms, then we might get a new sequel for the game.
If not, then Notch might bring out a completely new IP with the same mechanics in the future. Who knows, this might be even better than Minecraft. If Microsoft is really smart and wants to compete with PlayStation, this is a very big opportunity for them.
