PS5 best-selling console in January 2026 as Switch 2 ranks second in U.S.

The new data report from Circana has revealed that the Sony PS5 was the best-selling console in the United States for January 2026, leading both in unit sales and revenue.

US Gaming spending hits $4.7 Billion
The total video game spending in the U.S. reached $4.7 billion in January 2026. This is a 3% increased compared to January 2025 ($4.559 billion).
We also saw a huge jump with 23% in subscriptions spending and 16% in hardware sales. Although there were 5% decline in accessories sales.
Hardware revenue has reached $248 million, which is up from $213 million year-over-year. But PS5 sales declined 17% compared to January 2025. Xbox Series X/S declined with 27% and the original Nintendo Switch saw a huge 79% decline.
At the same time, the Switch 2 launch and performance boosted overall hardware revenue and also stabilized the market during the transitional period.

Software sales and top titles
Content spending increased 3% year on year to $4.3 billion. Subscription services continued to play an important role in growth. Console content increased by 2%, PC content rose by 1%, while mobile spending fell by 1%.
Now, if we talk about the software charts, Call of Duty Black Ops 7 retained the number one position and was also ranked first on PlayStation platforms.
NBA 2K26 and Madden NFL 26 were followed by second and third place. Final Fantasy VII Remake saw a huge jump from 225th in December to ninth overall in January, after the release on Switch 2 and Xbox Series X/S.
