Ultimate next-gen console showdown

Despite being the ninth generation console’s device, the fight for domination between the fifth generation of consoles, that is, PS5 and Xbox Series X, remains close, as both devices offer similar quality of gaming.

When trying to decide which console to purchase, you need to understand the differences in the elements of hardware, software, games, and appearance. Here’s an in-depth look at what each system has to offer, to help you make the best choice for your gaming needs.

PS5 vs. Xbox Series X: Specs comparison

The novel characteristics of the PS5 and Xbox Series X are also improved specifications that are aimed for next-generation gaming. However, the Xbox Series X is a bit stronger in terms of GPU and storage capacity.

Still, both consoles have 4K resolution quality and are capable of performing games at the 120 frames per second mark for smooth and fantastic gameplay.

Games: The exclusive factor

There is no doubt that when it comes to exclusive games, the PS5 is miles ahead of the Xbox Series X. It has blockbuster titles like Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, God of War: Ragnarok, and Horizon Forbidden West. These games, coupled with hits like Final Fantasy XVI put PS5 as a force to be reckoned with.

At the same time, the lineup of games available for the Xbox Series X is even looking much better now that it includes Starfield or Forza Motorsport. Nevertheless, the Xbox exclusives have been accused of lacking the sort of cohesiveness demonstrated by Sony. However, the subscription to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate adds colossal value by allowing you to play hundreds of games, but new ones only for a fee per month.

Performance

In the tests of games such as Assassin’s Creed Valhalla and Devil May Cry 5, both the PS5 and Xbox Series X were able to support 4K @ 60 FPS. In the next scenario, load times in the PS5 were slightly lesser due to a bespoke 825 GB SSD but the disparity in fast travel in open-world games was not very distinct.

Interestingly, the Xbox Series X delivered even more detailed ray tracing and maintained higher steady frame rates when testing games at 120fps. So the variation in the performance matters little, but in games with fully utilized additional GPU capacity of Xbox, graphics may be slightly better.

Controller: DualSense vs. Xbox wireless

I can now say that transformations in the PS5 DualSense controller are a great leap forward from the DualShock 4 in terms of adjustable triggers and much-improved feedback. These advancements improve presence by considering pressure in a gamer’s hands when pulling triggers or feeling textures and realism in Astro’s Playroom.

On the other side, the Xbox Series X controller is a more familiar one and with not much of a difference from the earlier Xbox series controller. It’s not as feature-packed as the DualSense but it is solid, comfortable and uses AA batteries for long gaming sessions.

Price: Which console offers more value?

The PS5 and Xbox Series X have equal prices with the same tag of $499. While Sony has created a more affordable model in PS5 Digital Edition at $399, Microsoft has the Xbox Series S at $299 though lower in features than the Xbox Series X.

Sales and bundles are also involved and both platforms traditionally get special offers during major shopping events such as Black Friday. Both systems offer excellent value depending on your preferences.

Backwards compatibility and game library

They both seem to have fairly decent levels of backward compatibility. Cross-gen games that include titles meant for the PlayStation 4 Pro are also supported by the PS5 console. The Xbox Series X takes it a notch higher allowing not only Xbox One games but also games from the Xbox 360 and the original Xbox console.

If you have a huge disc collection from the previous generations, then the Xbox Series X is for you.

Final conclusion

Looking at the PS5 and Xbox Series X, the decision comes down to what gamers consider most important as gamers. There is a lot to be said about PlayStation Indies if you are after the exclusives, the different feel of the new controller, and perhaps even a little better loading times.

However, If raw power, better backward compatibility and the new look matter to you, Xbox Series X is the best choice.
