The developer Cloud Imperium Games has officially announced that the game has surpassed $1 billion in crowdfunding. This makes this project the most successful crowdfunded entertainment project ever created.
Star Citizen is now a billion-dollar project
This game was first revealed in 2012 by the renowned game developer Chris Roberts. At that time, the project launched with a crowdfunding campaign targeting roughly $500,000.
Players’ reaction was much greater than expected. Over the years, millions of backers have remained loyal to the game by selling their ships, pledging, subscribing, and otherwise supporting its development financially. It has been 14 years since that support and we are now at $1 billion.
There is no doubt that it began as a niche project and now it has evolved into an ambitious and expansive development.
Squadron 42 is nearing completion
Alongside the online universe of Star Citizen, Cloud Imperium Games is also developing Squadron 42, which is a single-player, story-driven game set in the same universe.
Chris Roberts has recently shared that this game is in the final stages of development. This game is especially designed to deliver a higher level of cinematic experience, which will blend storytelling and gameplay.
Players can expect this game to feel almost like an interactive movie experience. For now, there is no official release timeline for this game as well.
Release window
Star Citizen is currently playable through ongoing alpha builds and regular updates, but the full commercial launch still remains the biggest mystery.
Some gaming industry experts think that Squadron 42 could be released in 2027, especially when some massive games like GTA 6, Fable, and Marvel’s Wolverine are expected to take over the gaming market in the near future. But it hasn’t been confirmed by Cloud Imperium Games.
