$1,000+ Price Tag is too costly for the fans
Since the Steam Machine’s price reveal, Valve has received nonstop criticism from fans and gamers. Recently, they responded to the criticism, saying the company has no plans to reduce the price of the new hardware anytime soon.
The company has admitted that a lower price would boost sales for the console, but the current market conditions and rising hardware costs make the price cut impossible for now.
Why is the Steam Machine so expensive?
According to Valve engineers Yazan Aldehayyat and Pierre-Loup Griffais, the company already understands that affordable hardware would lead to stronger sales.
They also have acknowledged that “the cheaper, the better” when it comes to attracting the customer. However, this may sound good, but the current price of the console reflects today’s challenging hardware market.
Memory, storage, and other essential PC components are now more expensive if we compare them to previous years.
This is largely due to an increase in demand from the AI industry and ongoing supply chain pressure. Based on the current market conditions, lowering the Steam Machine price is not a viable option.

Conclusion
For now, the company seems to be defending the pricing of the console by highlighting its long-term vision.
Unlike the gaming consoles, this console is designed as an open PC platform powered by SteamOS. This provides a pure PC like experience on a small device.
However, for now, the fans and gamers don’t seem quite convinced with the pricing and performance of the console. They would rather invest in a good gaming PC instead of having a Steam Machine.
How much does the Steam Machine cost?
The Steam Machine starts at €1,039 ($1,049) for the 512GB SSD model.
Why isn’t Valve lowering the Steam Machine’s price?
Valve says rising hardware costs, including storage and memory prices, make a price reduction impossible at the moment.
What is the Steam Machine?
It is a compact small-form-factor gaming PC that ships with SteamOS and is designed to deliver a console-like experience while maintaining the flexibility of PC gaming.
