The PGA Championship is Woods’ first event since the Masters.
At the ongoing PGA Championship 2024 from 16th to 19th May, Xander Schauffele began this major championship with a 62 in the first round of the PGA Championship 2024 at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky. His 9-under effort gives him a three-shot lead over Tony Finau, Sahith Theegala, and Mark Hubbard after 18 holes.
His previous 62 came at the US Open last year. Other top players in the field include Rory McIlroy, Collin Morikawa, Tom Kim, Brooks Koepka, Scottie Scheffler, and Cam Smith.
Brooks Koepka, the defending champion and LIV Golf standard bearer, is on even par through nine, while Tiger Woods struggles with a one-over finish. Woods, who won one of his 15 major titles at Valhalla in 2000, struggled from the start and took a bogey on his second hole.
This is Woods’ first event since the Masters, having earned a tournament-record 24th consecutive made cut at Augusta National. New dad Scheffler is bidding for a fifth win in his last six starts and will be among the late wave when he heads out from the first hole. Scheffler, who sat out last week’s tune-up event while awaiting the birth of his son Bennett, has had 24 days off since his last round of competitive golf.
