The tournament is set to take place in India for the first time.
The men’s hockey Asian Champions Trophy 2023 is slated to be held from August 3 to August 12, 2023, at the Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium in Chennai, India. Also known as the Hero Asian Champions Trophy 2023 owing to sponsorship reasons, the tournament will feature a total of six teams including host India, China, Pakistan, Malaysia, Japan, and South Korea. This will be the seventh iteration of the prestigious continental event.
The inaugural edition of the men’s Asian Champions Trophy took place in 2011 when China was the host. This tournament saw India defeat their arch-rival Pakistan in a penalty shootout. To date, India and Pakistan are the most successful teams in the history of the competition, having won three titles each. South Korea is the defending champion of the tournament, winning the trophy back in 2021.
Ahead of the Asian Games 2022, this event will act as a preparatory event for all the participating nations. The structure of the Asian Champions Trophy is such that each team gets an opportunity to face the other five teams once during the group stage. The four most successful teams will proceed to the semi-finals. The winning teams from this stage will compete against each other in the final match slated for August 12, 2023.
