From being sidelined during the FIH Odisha Hockey Men’s World Cup 2023 in Bhubaneswar-Rourkela due to injury to clinching the Asian Games Gold, 2023 has been a roller coaster ride for Indian Men’s Hockey Team midfielder, Hardik Singh. His nomination for the FIH Player of the Year Award 2023 adds another feather to his cap, making this year exceptionally special for him.
“I’m both amazed and honored to be nominated for the FIH Player of the Year Award 2023. Receiving recognition on an international stage is a dream for any sportsperson. It certainly fuels the motivation to strive for even greater achievements,” exclaimed an elated Hardik.
However, he admitted that this wasn’t his best year and he could have performed better. “I’m ecstatic, but I wouldn’t call it my best year. I could have achieved much more, especially during the World Cup, where an injury at such a crucial stage was heartbreaking. Nevertheless, I’m content with the year overall—having contributed to the FIH Pro League campaign, securing the Asian Champions Trophy title, and winning Gold at the Asian Games,” he shared.
With his dynamic presence in the midfield, the 25-year-old has emerged as a key figure in the Indian team in recent years. He also served as the deputy to Harmanpreet Singh during the Asian Champions Trophy 2023 and the Asian Games 2023, where India clinched Gold medals.
Reflecting on his transition into the leadership group, Hardik, who received the Hockey India Balbir Singh Sr. Award for Player of the Year 2022, said, “I believe I was always prepared for this opportunity.”
“I’ve learned the art of leading from the front by observing my seniors—Sardar Singh, PR Sreejesh, Manpreet Singh, and Harmanpreet Singh. I willingly shoulder responsibility as it allows me to bring out my best and motivates my teammates to excel on the field,” he added.
