Controversy as India-Pakistan shake hands in Sultan of Johor Cup 2025 after boycott in cricket

India fought back from two goals down to secure 3-3 draw against Pakistan.

The Sultan of Johor Cup 2025 on Tuesday witnessed India locking horns with their arch-rival Pakistan at the Taman Daya Hockey Stadium in Malaysia. However, what happened during the game triggered controversy on social media.

The players exchanged high-fives after the national anthems of both teams ahead of a crucial encounter. In a hard-fought game, India played a 3-3 draw, as both teams shared one point each. Interestingly, both teams engaged in a customary handshake after the game as well.

The gesture comes in the wake of both countries having strained relations in recent months due to a military war in May. As a result, the Indian T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav declined to shake hands with the Pakistan players in the Asia Cup 2025.

Meanwhile, the Harmanpreet Kaur-led side didn’t shake hands with the Women in Green as well in the ongoing Women’s World Cup.

The cordial exchange comes after the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) instructed its players to avoid unnecessary confrontations. A PHF official told PTI:

“The players have been told that if the Indian players don’t shake hands before or after the match, just ignore the gesture and move on. They have also been told to avoid any emotional tussles or signs during the game.”

It is worth noting that the Men’s Hockey Asia Cup 2025 in Rajgir saw Pakistan withdraw from the tournament due to scheduling and logistical concerns.

How has India fared in the Sultan of Johor Cup 2025 so far?

India kicked off their campaign with a 3-2 win over Great Britain, who are the reigning champions and the most successful side in the tournament. Notably, Rohit scored a brace.

The Harmanpreet Singh-led team secured a dominating 4-2 victory over New Zealand, with all four coming from different players.

Then, the side clashed against Pakistan, suffering a major setback as they didn’t score any goals in the first 40 minutes compared to the opposition’s 2. But India fought back to end the game 3-3, with help from three different goal-scorers.

Currently, India are second in the points table with two victories in three games and seven points. They will have to finish in the first two positions to advance to the final round. With two goals each, Rohit and Araijeet Singh Hundal have been the top performers for the side.
