FIH Pro League 2024-25: Germany women's team arrive in Bhubaneswar for hockey tournament

Co-Captains Linnea Wiedemann and Sarah Strauss shared their excitement before FIH Pro League matches in India.
The German women’s hockey team arrived at Biju Patnaik International Airport, Bhubaneswar, Odisha on Monday ahead of their Women’s FIH Pro League 2024-25 fixtures in India.
Led by Co-Captains Linnea Wiedemann and Sarah Strauss, Germany will take on Spain on 15 February before facing hosts India on 21 February.
Germany finished runners-up in last season’s Pro League behind the Netherlands, but they have struggled for form this year. With only two draws from four matches, they currently sit seventh in the standings with three points. Having conceded 13 goals already, they will be looking to tighten their defense ahead of the crucial upcoming games.
Speaking upon arrival, Co-Captain Wiedemann said, “The Kalinga Stadium always has an incredible atmosphere, and we are looking forward to playing here. We know facing India in front of their home crowd will be tough, but we will focus on our performance and give our best.”

Echoing her teammate’s thoughts, Co-Captain Strauss added, “I feel great coming back to Bhubaneswar. We played here three years ago, and it was a wonderful experience. Some experienced players have returned from their post-Olympics break, giving us a fresh squad. We are focusing on team cohesion and looking to secure valuable points.”
What is the format of the tournament?
Nine teams will face each other in the round-robin tournament to be held between November and June on home soil, away or neutral games (clustered caravan format). The team finishing at the top of the table after the conclusion of all games will be awarded the trophy.
The team ending at the bottom of the pile will face relegation and will be replaced by the Women’s FIH Nations Cup winner, who will compete in the next edition.
The champion will also earn direct qualification for the FIH Hockey World Cup 2026. The Netherlands and Belgium have already qualified for the quadrennial tournament as hosts of the competition. Germany ensured a spot for themselves by ending at the second spot in the previous edition of the Pro League (they were awarded the quota since the Dutch finished at the top).
