Top five hockey tournaments to watch out for in 2025

Many big hockey tournaments will take place this year.
After a 7-year break, the Hockey India League has returned in 2025 with 8 competing teams. The tournament has adopted a hybrid format blending round-robin and elimination stages. Just like that, this year, Hockey fans will witness some of the most prestigious tournaments, showing the sport’s incredible speed, skill, and passion
Not just HIL, 2025 promises a calendar packed with exciting tournaments. From fierce rivalries to emerging talent, these are the five must-watch events for any hockey fan, let’s take a look at them:

2025 Men’s FIH Hockey Junior World Cup
India will host an expanded 24-team field hockey championship in December 2025. It will be the expansion of the Men’s FIH Junior World Cup. This 14th edition represents the first time the under-21 tournament will accommodate this many national teams. Of course, this has set a new milestone for the International Hockey Federation’s youth competition.
The decision to increase participation shows field hockey’s growing global reach among emerging talent.
15th Hockey India Junior Men’s National Championship
The 15th Hockey India Junior Men’s National Championship 2025 will be held from August 12 to August 22, 2025. The venue for the championship has not been finalized yet.
The most recent 14th Hockey India Junior Men National Championship was held from September 9 to September 19, 2024, in Jalandhar, Punjab 2. The previous year’s championship (13th edition) was held from June 12 to June 22, 2023, in Rourkela, Odisha 2.
This is an annual national-level tournament organized by Hockey India for junior men players under the age of 20. The tournament follows a standard format with participating teams competing in a round-robin group stage followed by knockout matches.
Women’s Hockey India League 2025
The Women’s Hockey India League (HIL) is set to kick off on 12 January 2025 at Ranchi’s iconic Marang Gomke Jaipal Singh Munda Astro Turf Stadium.
Both men’s and women’s teams will take their talent to alternate venues for select matches. The league’s culmination is scheduled for 26 January, when the top two teams from the women’s pool stage will clash in the grand finale to determine the champions.
Continental Championships
The 2025 Continental Championships for hockey include the Men’s Pan American Cup, scheduled from July 24 to August 3, 2025, in Montevideo, Uruguay, featuring eight teams competing for a spot in the 2026 Men’s FIH Hockey World Cup26.
The Women’s Pan American Cup is also set for July 24 to August 3, 2025, in Montevideo, coinciding with the men’s tournament. The dates and venues of the Euro Hockey Championships have not yet been confirmed but will determine qualification for the 2026 FIH Hockey World Cup.
Sultan of Johor Cup
The Malaysian sporting calendar shines bright with the Sultan of Johor Cup. Young talents under 21 showcase their skills in this competition, which has carved its niche since its inception in the early 2010s.
The British dominance in this tournament tells a compelling story, with their four championship titles setting a benchmark. India’s presence has been equally noteworthy, securing the trophy three times. Australia and Germany have each tasted victory twice, while the host nation Malaysia has also earned their moment of glory with one championship.
The most recent chapter of this tournament unfolded in 2024, where Great Britain emerged triumphant in a nail-biting 3-2 victory. As anticipation builds for the upcoming edition, the tournament dates remain wrapped.
