India's projected path to the final at Men's Hockey Asian Champions Trophy 2026
India look to retain Champions Trophy title after Asian Games glory
India begin their campaign at the Men’s Hockey Asian Champions Trophy 2026 on October 27, aiming to extend their dominance in Asian hockey.
Craig Fulton’s side are the two-time defending champions and outright favourites to retain the title. Further the absence of Pakistan (WR-12) makes India’s route to the title easier, with the next best-ranked opponent being Malaysia at 14th.
India also arrive at the tournament as the two-time reigning Asian Games champions after securing gold and direct qualification for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics. They are also the most successful team in the Men’s Hockey Asian Champions Trophy history, with five titles.
However, the eighth-place finish at the 2026 Men’s Hockey World Cup exposed areas that require improvement if they are to remain competitive against the world’s best sides.
Head coach Fulton has also named the strongest squad possible for the tournament, signalling that India would rather defend their title than experiment or test bench strength.
Here’s a look at India’s potential route to the title at Men’s Hockey Asian Champions Trophy 2026.

India’s immediate task is to finish among the top four in the six team round-robin league. Each side will play five matches, with the top four advancing to the semi-finals. A strong finish could help India secure a favourable knockout matchup.
All five matches are scheduled for 7 pm IST at the Olympian Surjit Singh Hockey Stadium in Jalandhar.
The opener against Bangladesh gives India a chance to start strongly. The fixtures against China and Japan follow on consecutive days, before India take on Malaysia and South Korea to close the league stage.
Consistency across these games will be crucial, particularly against teams capable of challenging for the top positions.

India’s Asian Champions Trophy squad retains much of the Asian Games winning core, including captain Harmanpreet Singh, Hardik Singh and leading forwards Abhishek and Mandeep Singh.
There are, however, some changes, goalkeeper Krishan Bahadur Pathak has returned, while young defender Amandeep Lakra and midfielder Aditya Arjun Lalage have another opportunity to establish themselves.
Vishnu Kant Singh and forward Angad Bir Singh have been named reserves. These selections give the coaching staff scope to assess younger options alongside experienced campaigners.
Semi-final — Japan
If India finish at the top of the league standings, Japan could emerge as their projected semi-final opponent, assuming they secure fourth place.
Japan finished fifth at the 2026 Asian Games, but their technical ability, quick passing and disciplined defensive structure make them a side India would need to approach carefully in a knockout match.
Recent results however, favour India. The two sides last met at the 2026 Asian Games on September 26, when India registered a 2-0 victory in the pool stage. India also defeated Japan 3-2 at the 2025 Asia Cup and 5-1 at the 2024 Asian Champions Trophy.

At the 2023 Asian Champions Trophy, India recorded a commanding 5-0 semi-final victory over Japan. These results underline India’s recent superiority, although a semi-final would present a different challenge under pressure.
For India, the key would be to establish control early, maintain defensive discipline and avoid allowing Japan to dictate the tempo through quick transitions. Converting penalty corners and making the most of circle entries could prove decisive.
Japan’s ability to remain organized means India cannot afford to become wasteful in possession or leave spaces behind their defensive line.

With the experience of captain Harmanpreet Singh and the attacking options available to India, the hosts would enter this projected contest with confidence. However, Japan’s final league position will determine whether this matchup materialises, and India must first secure the top spot to follow this route.
Final – Malaysia
Malaysia could be India’s projected opponent in the final if both teams progress through the knockouts. Their strong showing at the 2026 Asian Games, where they finished runners-up after reaching the gold medal match, makes them a credible challenger.
Malaysia also finished ahead of South Korea and Japan in the final standings, highlighting their position among Asia’s leading teams.
India, however, have enjoyed the upper hand in recent meetings. They defeated Malaysia 5-1 in the Asian Games final to claim gold. India had also beaten them 4-3 at the 2025 Sultan Azlan Shah Cup, 4-1 at the 2025 Asia Cup and 8-1 during the 2024 Asian Champions Trophy. The 2023 Asian Champions Trophy final was also closer, with India edging Malaysia 4-3 to lift the title.

Despite India’s favourable recent record, Malaysia should not be underestimated. Their attacking quality and ability to create scoring opportunities mean that defensive lapses could quickly change the momentum.
India would need to improve their consistency in possession, remain compact under pressure and make their penalty corner opportunities count.
Malaysia’s silver-medal campaign at the Asian Games also suggests they have the quality to compete in another high stakes final.

For India, a potential meeting with Malaysia would offer an opportunity to reinforce their dominance in Asian hockey and defend their Asian Champions Trophy crown on home soil.
The hosts would have the advantage of recent success against Malaysia, but the final would ultimately depend on execution, composure and performance on the day.
