While the defeat to Netherlands left the Indian men’s hockey team on the verge of an exit from the FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup 2026, Argentina’s stunning win over England has thrown Pool E open with one round of matches remaining for each team.
India suffered a 1-3 loss to reigning Olympic champions Netherlands in a crucial pool E fixture in Amstelveen on Saturday, leaving their fate out of their own hands in the race to reach the semi-finals.
It is still out of their hands, but Argentina’s 3-1 victory over second-placed England has made things interesting in Pool E.
India still find themselves at the bottom of the Pool, with just one point from three games. Meanwhile, Netherlands sit pretty comfortably at the top with six points, while England and Argentina are on three points each in third and fourth positions respectively.

Despite being last in the Pool, India head into Monday’s virtual knockout showdown with Argentina with their semi-final hopes still alive.
However, the road is still tough for Harmanpreet Singh’s side. They must beat Argentina and then hope Netherlands defeat England in the other remaining match in Pool E. But with India carrying a goal difference of “-4”, the equation is not as simple as it looks.
India need to win their match against Argentina by a margin of two goals or more. A victory by that margin will bring the goal difference of both teams to “-2” (Argentina currently have a goal difference of 0). And India can then overtake Argentina based on scoring more goals.
As things stand, Los Leones have scored four and conceded as many, while India have scored thrice and shipped in seven goals. A two-goal victory will leave the Men in Saffron with at least one more goal scored than Argentina.
These are the parameters on the points table in the order of decreasing priority: Total Points, Matches Won, Goal Difference, Goals Scored, Head-to-Head, Field Goals Scored.
This isn’t going to be an easy task, considering the South American outfit has been largely clinical in the tournament, while the Asian champions have been below par.
It is also worth noting that Argentina had handed India an 8-0 drubbing in the FIH Pro League earlier this year—the joint worst defeat ever for the side.
Then, in a fixture set to be held later on the same day, Netherlands have to necessarily beat England. The math is more complicated here.
Now, if India win and England lose, with a two-goal margin, the points (3) as well as the goal difference (-2) will be the same.
To understand it better, a 2-0 India win with a 0-2 England loss, or a 3-1 India win with a 1-3 England loss, and so on would benefit England.
So here is the final equation for the Craig Fulton-coached team to overtake England.
As things stand, England have scored five goals, conceded as many and have a goal difference of ‘0’.
Hence, if India defeat Argentina by a margin of two goals, they will have to hope that England lose by a margin of at least three goals against the Dutch in the later game.
All-in-all, India will need to defeat Argentina by a margin bigger than England’s loss to the Netherlands.
What is India’s current position in Pool E of Men’s Hockey World Cup 2026?
