With losses against England and Netherlands, India’s semi-final qualification hopes hang by a thread
India’s first-round defeat against England was always going to complicate their semi-final qualification chances at the FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup 2026, given the quality of opponents that awaited them in the second round.
Taking on the Netherlands, in their own backyard was never going to be a straightforward task.
Despite the India’s best efforts, they eventually lost by 1-3. The first two quarters saw the Men in Orange dominate the proceedings. However, India’s defence managed to hold off the Dutch attacks to keep the score at 0-0 at half-time.

In the third quarter, however, the tables turned as the World No. 1 team finally scored their first goal. They quickly secured another, and with less than 10 minutes left in the final quarter, Indian captain Harmanpreet Singh scored for India.
Unfortunately, the gulf in quality between the two teams was too wide, and India ultimately lost the contest.
Their final match in the second round will be against Argentina, a team which had thrashed India 8-0 only a few months back, during the FIH Men’s Pro League.
To qualify for the semi-finals, the Indian men’s hockey team needs to finish in the top two. Having lost two out of two matches so far, India’s fate now depends on several permutations and combinations.
Firstly, Argentina must defeat England, when the two teams take on each other in a few hours’ time. Even a draw, or an England win will lead to India’s elimination.
Should Argentina beat England, the Netherlands must also beat England to keep the latter’s win tally down to 1.
Even if both results go in India’s favour, they will still need to defeat Argentina by a big margin to secure second place in Pool E.
This task is easier said than done though, as England must lose both their matches by huge margins, and then India must beat Argentina by an even bigger margin to stay ahead on the goal difference count.
