The Indian women’s hockey team face Germany in the 5th-6th place playoff match at the FIH Women’s Hockey World Cup 2026, eyeing its best-ever finish in the tournament since 1974, when India finished fourth—its highest-ever finish at any Women’s Hockey World Cup.
There’s real history on the line. Salima Tete’s India have been one of the stories of this tournament, unbeaten in four of five matches, holding China, England and Australia to draws, and thrashing South Africa 6-1 in their best-ever World Cup win.

India’s only loss came against defending champions Netherlands, who beat them 2-0. A win today would give India their best finish since 1974, when they placed fourth at the very first World Cup under captain Ajinder Kaur, a team that famously beat the Netherlands, who’ve since gone on to win nine titles.

Germany won’t make it easy. Ranked fifth in the world, they’ve won seven of the last ten meetings against India, though India did take the most recent one, 1-0, in February 2025.
There’s also a personal edge to this fixture. Germany are coached by Janneke Schopman, who once held the same job with India, helping steer them to a fourth-place finish at the Tokyo Olympics before an unglamorous exit in 2024.

Some numbers for you all to ponder upon. India have scored just eight goals all tournament, six of them against South Africa alone, while Germany have managed 13.
Marijne will be hoping forwards like Navneet and Deepika can finally deliver in the final third, though Germany’s defence, having conceded eight, isn’t impenetrable either.
Stay tuned for updates as the action gets underway.
