India marched into the semifinals of the FIH Hockey Men’s Junior World Cup 2025 after edging past Belgium in a nerve-wrecking quarter-final. But a big challenge now awaits on December 7 (Sunday), a semi-final battle against seven-time winners and defending champions Germany.

The Blue Colts’ quarter-final against Belgium was a thriller from start to finish. Belgium struck first, with Gaspard Cornez-Massant scoring a field goal in the 13th minute. India, despite several opportunities, struggled to break the deadlock in the first half.

However, the momentum shifted dramatically in the third quarter. Captain Rohit Yadav scored with a drag-flick in the 45th minute to level the score. Just three minutes later, Sharda Nand Tiwari converted another penalty corner to give India a 2-1 lead.

But Belgium refused to bow out. Nathan Rogge scored a dramatic equaliser in the 59th minute, pushing the game into a penalty shootout.

In the shootout, India’s goalkeeper Princedeep Singh delivered a match-winning performance. After making crucial saves during regulation time, he stepped up again to block two Belgian attempts in the shootout.

India eventually won 4-3, with Sharda Nand Tiwari successfully converting three penalty strokes and Ankit Pal adding another to secure the victory.

Speaking of the most powerful force in the tournament Germany, they also endured a tense quarterfinal, needing a shootout to beat France after a 2-2 deadlock.

Goals from Alec von Schwerin and Paul Glander kept Germany ahead twice, only for France to equalise each time. German goalkeeper Jasper Ditzer was sensational, making vital saves throughout regulation time and overpowering France in the shootout, which Germany won 3-1. He later earned the Player of the Match honour.

Germany stands as the most successful team in the tournament’s history, winning seven titles, including the last tournamnet in 2023. India, however, have lifted the trophy twice in 2001 (6-1 vs Argentina) and 2016 (2-1 vs Belgium).

The recent history favours the Germans for India lost to them in the semifinals of both the 2021 and 2023 Junior World Cups.

Therefore, this FIH Hockey Men’s Junior World Cup 2025 semifinal clash on their home soil, would not just be a do-or-die battle for India, but also a chance to seek redemption.
