India vs Pakistan head-to-head: What is the H2H record between India and Pakistan in FIH Men's Hockey World Cup?

India’s only World Cup title in 1975 came after defeating Pakistan in the final in Kuala Lumpur

Few rivalries in world sport carry the weight of India vs Pakistan, and the two neighbours are about to renew it on the biggest stage of all—the FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup 2026.

The Indian men’s hockey team, chasing a first World Cup title since 1975, and Pakistan, four-time champions themselves, have been drawn into the same Pool D at the 2026 FIH Hockey World Cup.

India opened with a comfortable 3-1 win over Wales before running into England, who handed them a 2-4 defeat in Amstelveen after India had actually led at half-time.

That result leaves Harmanpreet Singh’s side searching for a big response, and there’s no bigger fixture to find it in than the one against Pakistan on August 19 at Wagener Stadium.

It will mark the two teams’ first meeting after 16 years, as the two sides haven’t crossed paths at a World Cup since India beat Pakistan 4-1 in New Delhi back in 2010.

Given the new tournament format, which does away with quarter-finals entirely, every point in the group stage now carries semi-final weight, making this edition’s India-Pakistan clash a matter of do-or-die for both teams.

Historically, Pakistan lead in hockey’s head-to-head tally across competitions with 82 wins as opposed to India’s 69 from 183 meetings, with 32 games drawn.

That gap is mostly a legacy of hockey’s golden decades, when India and Pakistan traded Olympic golds almost like clockwork.

The 1956 final in Melbourne set the tone when India won it through a Randhir Singh Gentle strike to claim a fifth straight gold, but Pakistan hit back four years later in Rome, beating India 1-0 in the final to finally end that streak.

The two went on to meet in Olympic finals through the 1960s and beyond, with Pakistan eventually finishing on top with 4 wins to India’s 2 across seven Olympic meetings.

The World Cup, though, tells a different story, and it’s the one that matters most heading into Wednesday. India leads by 3-2 across five meetings, with a 10-7 edge on goals scored.

Pakistan’s sole World Cup win over India in that count came in London 1986, nearly four decades ago now.

India’s crowning glory remains 1975, when they beat Pakistan in the final in Kuala Lumpur to claim their only World Cup title, a result Indian hockey fans have been looking to replicate for 51 years.

Recent form only sharpens the anticipation. The last time these sides met, in June’s FIH Pro League, India dominated by winning 7-1.
