India, who have finished with a bronze medal in the last two editions, have won both their opening two matches and sit two points clear at the top. Teams that finish within the top two will advance to the final on October 18 (Saturday).

Pakistan are currently fourth in the points standings after winning just one of their first two matches. The PAK U21 team started with a 7-2 mauling of hosts Malaysia before going down to the defending champions Great Britain 1-5.

Their best finish in the tournament was the runners-up finish in 2016 while they also finished third in 2023.

India started their campaign with a close win over the title holders Great Britain and followed it with another close win over New Zealand. PR Sreejesh’s wards have scored at least three goals in both of those matches.

Apart from India, Australia are the only other unbeaten side in the tournament. But they have a win and a draw each from their first two matches and sit at second place in the standings with four points. Australia have won the title twice in the tournament history and were the losing finalist in the last three editions.

While results dictate that India have been dominant in the tournament so far, they have been quite open defensively and have conceded two goals in each of their first two matches. Following their win over New Zealand, coach Sreejesh also called for the team to be more compact defensively.

The tournament is being played in a round-robin format, where each of the six participating teams will face the other five once, resulting in five league-stage matches per team.

Based on points earned, the top two teams will qualify for the final to compete for the title, while the third and fourth-placed teams will contest for the bronze medal. Teams finishing fifth and sixth will play a classification match to determine their final positions.
