India will aim for their fourth title at the Sultan of Johor Cup 2025.

The Sultan of Johor Cup 2025 is scheduled to take place from October 11 to 18 at the Taman Daya Hockey Stadium in Johor Bahru, Malaysia. The six nations competing in the tournament are India, Great Britain, Pakistan, Australia, New Zealand, and host Malaysia.

The under-21 competition, held annually, has previously witnessed Germany, Japan, South Korea, and Argentina competing too. Rohit will lead the India under-21 team and will be confident of returning with a better performance this season.

Speaking before departure, Indian junior men’s hockey team captain Rohit said, “We are really looking forward to competing at the Sultan of Johor Cup.

“This tournament is always special because it brings together some of the strongest junior teams from around the world, and performing here is a matter of pride for any of us.

“Last year, we returned with the bronze medal, but this time our aim is to better that performance and fight for a place in the Final. The atmosphere in the team is positive, and everyone is motivated to give their best for the country.”

Tournament history

The Sultan of Johor Cup, an annual under-21 international hockey tournament, has been held in Malaysia since its inception in 2011. The prestigious event takes place at the Taman Daya Hockey Stadium in Johor Bahru and has grown to become one of the most competitive youth tournaments in world hockey.

India has been one of the most consistent performers in the competition’s history. The Indian colts have lifted the title three times—2013, 2014, and again in 2022 after the tournament resumed following a two-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Apart from these triumphs, India has also secured the silver medal on four occasions (2012, 2015, 2018, and 2019) and claimed bronze three times (2017, 2023, and 2024).

In the previous edition held last season, Great Britain clinched their record fourth Sultan of Johor Cup title after edging past Australia 3-2 in a thrilling final. With this victory, they became the most successful team in the tournament’s history.

India, meanwhile, earned the bronze medal after defeating New Zealand. The match ended 2-2 in regulation time, before India held their nerve in the shootout to win 3-2.

This marked India’s second consecutive third-place finish, having also bagged bronze in 2023. In that edition, India overcame arch-rivals Pakistan in a dramatic contest that ended 3-3 in normal time. The young Indian side went on to win 6-5 in a tense shootout to secure their podium finish.
