Sultan of Johor Cup: Full list of title winners

India won the Sultan of Johor Cup for the first time in 2013.
Sultan of Johor Cup is one of the two major men’s field hockey tournaments hosted annually by the Malaysian Hockey Federation. The Sultan Azlan Shah Cup is the other competition. While the former is a juniors tournament (U-21s to be specific) held annually at the Taman Daya Hockey Stadium in Johor Bahru, the latter is a seniors tournament held in Ipoh in Perak since 2007.
The Sultan of Johor Cup was founded in 2011, as Great Britain and India became the first teams to win the title thrice. The Indian men’s junior hockey team were also the first to record successive titles and runners-up finishes.
Founded in the year 2011, the tournament now features eight teams competing against each other in two groups of four nations each. The top two sides at the end of the round-robin phase advance to the tournament’s semi-finals. World heavyweights Australia, Germany, Great Britain and India have been regular participants at the tournaments. Netherlands, Spain and Belgium are some of the elites yet to participate in the competition.
Malaysia, the hosts, are the only side to have featured at all the 12 editions of the tournament. India and Australia have played in 11 editions each, whereas Great Britain competed in 10, either as Great Britain or as England, Scotland or Wales’ side. The United States have played only once at the tournament and South Korea have not participated since the third edition, after playing two of the first three.
Germany won the two editions in which they participated in 2012 and 2023. India failed to finish on the podium at the inaugural edition, but have achieved the feat in every other edition they played in. Thus, the Blue Colts and Germany are also the only sides to have played in the semi-finals of every edition which they participated. Malaysia’s best finish is as the winners at the inaugural edition. They also finished as the runners-up at the 2013 edition.
