After the handsome win over Uruguay in their tournament opener, the Indian womenโ€™s hockey team will return to action today in the FIH Hockey World Cup Qualifiers 2026. India face Scotland, who defeated Wales 1-0 yesterday, in their second match in Hyderabad.

With the top two teams from each pool advancing to the semi-finals, this match is crucial for both India and Scotland, with the victor guaranteed to finish in the top two in Pool B.

Given Indiaโ€™s superiority in rankingsโ€”India are 9th in FIH womenโ€™s hockey rankings while Scotland are 15thโ€”Sjoerd Marijneโ€™s ladies will be the overwhelming favourites in this tie. Added to their favour is also the home advantage, with all matches taking place at the Gachibowli Stadium in Hyderabad.

Earlier yesterday, the Indian womenโ€™s hockey team made a perfect start to their campaign by seeing off Uruguay 4-0, with goals from Sunelita Toppo (21โ€ฒ), Ishika (40โ€ฒ), Lalremsiami (49โ€ฒ) and Rutuja Dadaso Pisal (58โ€ฒ).

Such was Indiaโ€™s dominance that the World No. 19 ranked Uruguay were only able to make 11 circle entries and earn just two penalty corners in the entire match. In comparison, India made 23 circle penetrations and were awarded six penalty corners, scoring once.

The host nation will hope for a better conversion rate against Scotland, who are expected to pose more of a threat. Like India, they also produced a dominating win over Wales, despite the 1-0 scoreline.

How India defeated Uruguay in FIH Hockey World Cup Qualifiers 2026

It was a bright start to the match in the first quarter as India made multiple circle entries and several goalscoring chances. In the fourth minute, the home side won the first penalty corner of the night as Udita found the net after a beautifully orchestrated variation, but her shot went a bit high and hence the goal wasnโ€™t given.

Uruguay too had their moments as they banked on counterattacking hockey but Indiaโ€™s resilient backline held their ground.

In the 21st minute, India broke the deadlock through a penalty corner as Sunelita Toppo (21โ€ฒ)  showed great reflexes to pounce on the rebound and tap the ball into the net to open the scoring.

Five minutes later, India received another penalty corner but this time, Annuโ€™s dragflick was stopped by the Uruguayan defence.

India held most of the possession in the second quarter. In the 29th minute Uruguay won their first penalty corner of the night, but the opportunity was squandered as India managed to swiftly defend their goal and hold the slim lead.

In the 36th minute, India were through on goal as Navneet Kaur found herself unmarked in front of the post but Uruguayโ€™s goalkeeper Maria Bate stepped out and delivered a decisive save.

In the 40th minute, India launched a quick attack as Sakshi Rana played a brilliant pass into the circle to Ishika (40โ€ฒ) who did well to slot the ball into the bottom left corner. Uruguay were awarded a penalty corner as well in the 40th minute but they couldnโ€™t reduce the deficit.

In the 49th minute, Rutuja Dadaso Pisal did well to dribble down the left flank and pass the ball to Lalremsiami (49โ€ฒ) in the midfield who carried the ball into the circle and delivered a powerful finish past the goalkeeper to score an incredible field goal for her side.

With just over two minutes left on the clock, Rutuja Dadaso Pisal (58โ€ฒ) dribbled down the middle and struck a powerful shot to find the net and seal the big victory for India.
