India won its first hockey Olympic medal a gold in 1928 at Amsterdam.

The Indian men’s hockey team has a rich history at the Olympic games dating back to 1928. The sport has not only produced legends but also has delivered milestone victories for the nation. India’s dominance hockey over the past has been unmatched to this date.

Hockey was introduced for the first time in the summer games in 1908 at London. The participation was at a minimum as only six nations competed at the inaugural edition. The numbers began to rise in the next few editions which also saw the India taking over the podium.

Major Dhyan Chand has been the nation’s greatest sporting hero whose exploits in Hockey is known worldwide. The legacy continued in the Indian hockey team as Balbir Singh Sr was known as the modern-day Dhyan Chand. He was one of the most successful captains in the history of hockey and an iconic centre-forward.

India’s first summer games medal in Hockey came during 1928 Amsterdam Olympics. The team went on to win six consecutive gold medals at the Olympics till 1956. The streak was broken by Pakistan during the final of the 1960 Olympics in Rome.

Leslie Claudius and Udham Singh remain the only Indian athletes to win four Olympic medals. There are a total of seven Indians with three Olympic gold medals in field hockey.
