Paris Olympics 2024 will be PR Sreejesh’s final assignment

The Indian men’s hockey team broke the 41-year long wait of winning an Olympic medal by winning a bronze at the Tokyo 2020 Games, and fans would be hoping for a repeat, if not an improvement.

India is the most successful country in men’s hockey at the Olympics, with a total of eight gold medals. Apart from this, they have also won one silver and three bronze medals. Their tally of 12 Olympic medals is also the highest for any nation.

Placed in pool B, India’s path to the knockouts won’t be an easy one with some strong opponents to contend with in the group stage which include Belgium (gold medal winner at Tokyo), Australia (silver medal winner at Tokyo) and World Number #6 Argentina.

Although a place in the quarters seem certain as the top four teams from each group qualify, India will hope to finish as high as possible, in order to avoid facing formidable opponents like Great Britain and Netherlands in the quarterfinals.

With the hockey campaign tagged as “Win it for Sreejesh”, as the legendary goalkeeper is set to retire from the sport after the event and the team having achieved the ideal balance of youth and experience for the 2024 Olympics, a 13th Olympic medal in hockey is certainly a possibility.

On the other hand, the Indian women’s hockey team had garnered the world’s attention when they won bronze at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. But they couldn’t secure a quota for the Paris edition.

When and where is hockey scheduled to take place at Paris Olympics 2024?

Hockey will begin on July 27 at the Paris Olympics with group matches for both men and women. The competition will move to the knockouts from August 4 with gold medal matches on August 8 and August 9.

It will be played at the Yves-du Manoir Stadium in the city of Paris, France.
