India are five time champions of Sultan Azlan Shah Cup.

The Sultan Azlan Shah Cup 2025 kicked off on Sunday, November 23 and will run until November 30. The Sultan Azlan Shah Stadium in Ipoh is serving as the host to the competition.

Belgium, India, New Zealand, Malaysia, South Korea and Canada are the six participating teams. With a single round-robin format in place, each team will compete against others once in the group stage. Then, the top two teams will lock horns in the final, while the other four teams battle it out for the 3/4 place.

The last edition in 2024 saw the Japanese side winning their maiden title after beating Pakistan 4-1 in the penalty shootout. However, both sides are not taking part in the ongoing edition.

The Belgian side is the highest-ranked (3) FIH team among all six teams. It will only be their second appearance in the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup, and the first after 2008.

Meanwhile, World No. 7, India are making their 23rd appearance in the tournament, and have won the tournament on five occasions. In their last time out in 2019, India emerged as the runner-ups, losing to South Korea.

The 2022 edition witnessed the Korean side losing in the final against Malaysia. They will also be making their 23rd appearance, and are the three-time champions.

World No. 13 and the hosts Malaysia is the most experienced side in terms of appearances, as it will be their 31st edition. However, their only title victory came in 2022, and it will be interesting to see if they can defend the title.

Ranked 11th in the FIH rankings, New Zealand will be appearing in their 19th edition, with two title victories in 2012 and 2015. They finished third during their last campaign in 2024.

It will be Canada’s 11th appearance in the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup, and the World No. 20 haven’t appeared in the finals yet. The 2025 edition provides them with an opportunity to make history.
