The Sultan Azlan Shah Cup 2025 is scheduled to take place from November 23 to 30 at the Azlan Shah Stadium in Ipoh, Malaysia. The six nations competing in the tournament are Belgium, India, New Zealand, South Korea, Canada, and host Malaysia.

The senior competition, held annually, has previously witnessed Australia, Pakistan, Germany, Great Britain, Argentina, the Netherlands, Japan, Spain, the Soviet Union, and China competing too. Defender Sanjay will lead the Indian hockey team in the absence of regular captain Harmanpreet Singh.

The Sultan Azlan Shah Cup, an annual senior international hockey tournament, has been held in Malaysia since its inception in 1983. The prestigious event has grown to become one of the most competitive tournaments in world hockey.

Australia are the most consistent nation with 10 titles. Team India have won the title four times—1985, 1991, 1995, and 2009. They have clinched the silver medal thrice (2008, 2016, and 2019), while securing seven bronze medals (1983, 2000, 2006, 2007, 2012, 2015, and 2017).

In the previous edition held last year, Japan defeated Pakistan in a thrilling final after the regular time score ended 2-2. They won the match 4-1 on a penalty shootout to claim their maiden title in 2024. Meanwhile, New Zealand brushed past Malaysia with a 3-2 scoreline to clinch the bronze medal.

Sultan Azlan Shah Cup 2025 format

The 2025 Sultan Azlan Shah Cup will be played in a round-robin format, where each of the six participating teams will face the other five once, resulting in five league-stage matches per team.

Based on points earned, the top two teams will qualify for the final to compete for the title, while the third and fourth-placed teams will contest for the bronze medal. Teams finishing fifth and sixth will play a classification match to determine their final positions.
