India finished second after managing to draw against England in the last match of the first round
Indian women’s hockey team have punched their ticket to the second round of the FIH Women’s Hockey World Cup 2026, and this time there is plenty to be pleased about rather than worried.
It started with a 2-2 draw against Olympic silver medallist China, an impressive result against one of the tournament favourites.
Then came the statement performance led by a 6-1 demolition of South Africa, India’s biggest-ever win at a World Cup, with six different players finding the net.
That win took them to the top of Pool D on goal difference, meaning a draw against England in the last group game would be enough. And that’s exactly what India delivered, but not without a fight.

England threw everything at them in the second half including 28 circle entries, 12 penalty corners, even pulling their goalkeeper for an extra attacker in the closing minutes.
India simply refused to budge, and the back line held its nerve to close out a 0-0 draw. China finished top of the pool with seven points, India second with five, England third on four, and South Africa winless at the bottom.
India and China also carry a point forward into round two, courtesy of their opening draw.
However, the next stage won’t be easy. India have been drawn with hosts and reigning champions Netherlands, who are also the World No. 1 side, alongside Australia and China.
Only two from that group go through to the semi-finals, so India will need to back up this pool-stage form against far sterner opposition.
