India will aim for a record fourth title in Malaysia.

The Sultan of Johor Cup 2024 will begin on October 19 with the final scheduled for October 26. The latest edition of the annual U-21 men’s hockey tournament will feature six teams. Team India will be led by Amir Ali and the boys will look for the record fourth title in the competition. The tournament will mark a coaching debut for legendary Indian hockey goalkeeper PR Sreejesh, who will be in his first assignment as a coach

Malaysia Hockey Confederation president- Datuk Seri Subahan Kamal said the Sultan of Johor Cup will be the best platform for the national team to prepare for the Asian Junior Cup in Oman in November. “It is also our team’s qualification for the Junior World Cup to be held in India next year.”

Tournament history

Since its inception in 2011, Malaysia have hosted the Sultan of Johor Cup, an international U-21 competition annually. A total of five countries have won the tournament, with Great Britain and India winning the joint-highest number of titles (3) so far. The other nations to win the Sultan of Johor Cup title are —Australia (2), Germany (2), and hosts Malaysia (1).

The host nation won the inaugural edition by defeating Australia 3-2, while Germany won the second edition by beating India 3-2 in the final. Since then, India have been a formidable opponent, winning the tournament three times (2013, 2014, 2022). Unfortunately, the 2020 and 2021 seasons were cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic. India also have the most number of final appearances (7) followed by followed by Great Britain and Australia (5).

In the last edition, India finished third after defeating Pakistan in a thrilling shoot-off. They had lost to eventual champions Germany in the semi-final (3-6). Germany beat Australia in the shoot-out after a goalless draw to lift their second title and first since 2012.

When and where will Sultan of Johor Cup 2024 take place (Venue)?

The Sultan of Johor Cup 2024 will take place from October 19 to 26. Matches will be played at the Taman Daya Hockey Stadium in Johor Bahru, Malaysia.

How many teams will participate in Sultan of Johor Cup 2024?

A total of six teams will participate in the 12th edition of the Sultan of Johor Cup. These six teams are—India, Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand, Australia and Great Britain.

Format

Teams will be competing in a round-robin format. The top two-ranked teams will then advance to the finals while the teams that finish third and fourth will play for bronze, while an additional classification match will be held between teams finishing fifth and sixth.
