The Sultan of Johor Cup 2024 is set to begin soon as the junior men’s hockey players will get to battle for the title. There will be rising stars in the U-21 teams hoping to strike it big on the stage. The 12th edition of the tournament will feature six teams in the fray as the Indian men’s junior team will be led by PR Sreejesh. The former men’s goalkeeper will be guiding the team as they seek a record fourth title.

The Indian team will begin their campaign against Japan on October 19. Amir Ali is the captain of the squad while Rohit will be the vice captain. The 18-member team will be aiming to script history to become the first team to win four titles. Ali had stated that the team is well prepared under the guidance of their new head coach, Sreejesh.

India has been one of the most consistent teams in the history of the tournament. Since the first edition in 2011, India has competed in every edition except in 2016. Only in the first edition has the nation failed to secure a podium finish as in every other edition which it appeared there has been a podium finish.

This time there are high expectations from the team as few players have already represented the senior men’s team. Gurjot Singh and Ali had featured in the team which clinched the Men’s Asian Champions Trophy 2024. Their experience will boost the team spirit especially in the final stages of the tournament.

India could face tough competition from defending champions, Germany and former champions Great Britain and Australia. Germany had defeated India in the semi-final of the previous edition and went on to beat Australia in the final via shootout. With only a few hours to go, the Indian stars will be ready to avenge their defeat and take back the title.

The Sultan of Johor Cup 2024 will begin from October 19 and go on till 26. Matches will be held at the Taman Daya Hockey Stadium in Johor Bahru, Malaysia.
