The Indian women’s hockey team stand at the cusp of history, when they take on Australia in what will be the last pool E fixture at the FIH Women’s Hockey World Cup 2026 in Amstelveen on Sunday.
A victory is likely to take them into the semi-finals for the first time, since 1974, but they will still need Netherlands to defeat China in the earlier match.
The Sjoerd Marijne-coached side has been in phenomenal form this tournament. They emerged unbeaten from pool D, the toughest pool in the competition, with results including a 2-2 stalemate against reigning Olympic silver medalists China and a gritty goalless draw against England, which sealed them a spot in the second round.

In between, they had also defeated South Africa 6-1, which is India’s biggest-ever win in World Cups.
In their first pool E fixture, the World Number #9 side fought hard till the final hooter, before going down 0-2 against nine-time champions Netherlands.
It was a lion-hearted display against a side touted as one of the greatest ever in the history of the sport, especially considering that they had conceded in the second minute.
With Australia holding China to a 1-1 draw, the pool is now wide open.
Salima Tete’s side needs a win in the final fixture and hope the Dutch beat China to finish second on the table.
