India have won the title twice in its history.

The Women’s Hockey Asia Cup, launched by the Asian Hockey Federation in 1985, has crowned continental champions and often served as a qualifier for the FIH Hockey World Cup.

It has been the stage where Asia’s top teams battle for supremacy, producing iconic matches and memorable triumphs, shaping the future of women’s hockey in the continent.

The tournament was initially designed to give Asian teams a competitive platform and to elevate women’s hockey in the region. The initial few editions were played in a round-robin format, allowing teams to test themselves against multiple opponents and build rivalries that remain intense to this day.

The first-ever edition of the championships in Seoul saw South Korea claim the first title, establishing themselves as the early powerhouse in Asia. China joined the list of champions by winning the 1989 edition in Hong Kong, also decided in round-robin style.

These early tournaments set the foundation for the competitive nature of the Asia Cup, giving teams a chance to showcase tactical skills and individual talent.

Since 1993, the tournament adopted a knockout format culminating in a final. South Korea won in Hiroshima that year, defeating China 3–0, and followed up with another title in 1999 at New Delhi, edging India 3–2. These victories reflected South Korea’s dominance in the early decades of the competition.

India made history in 2004 at New Delhi by defeating Japan 1–0 to claim their first Asia Cup title. The 2007 edition saw Japan lift their maiden crown in Hong Kong, beating South Korea in a dramatic shootout after a 1–1 draw.

China returned to glory in 2009, defeating India 5–3 in Bangkok, demonstrating their continued presence at the top of Asian hockey.

Japan further established themselves in modern-era hockey with victories in 2013 and 2022. Their 2013 win in Kuala Lumpur was secured with a 2–1 triumph over South Korea, while their 2022 Muscat edition victory, beating South Korea 4–2, marked their most recent success.

India’s second triumph came in 2017 at Kakamigahara, defeating China 5–4 in a penalty shootout after a 1–1 draw, creating one of the tournament’s most thrilling finals.

The 2022 edition in Muscat added another chapter to Japan’s success story, as they beat South Korea 4–2 in the final to lift their third Asia Cup crown.

The 2025 edition in Hangzhou saw China reclaim the title with a commanding 4–1 victory over India in the final, underlining their resurgence as a continental powerhouse.
