South Korea, China and India are the only nations to win the tournament previously.

The Women’s Junior Asia Cup 2024 will be the ninth edition of the tournament and will be held in Muscat, Oman. The tournament will commence on December 7 with the final scheduled for December 15. This is the first time that the tournament will be played in Oman, with the latest edition featuring 10 teams. After successfully hosting the Men’s Junior Asia Cup, Oman will now host the Women’s Junior Asia Cup as well.

This tournament will also serve as the qualifier for the 2025 FIH Women’s Junior World Cup. The number of teams has been increased from 16 to 24, providing six quotas for the Asian Confederation. All six spots are up for grabs, with the top six teams qualifying for the Junior World Cup.

Indian junior women’s hockey team will aim to defend their title and repeat the feat achieved by the men’s team at the same ground. India will start their campaign on December 8 against Bangladesh.

A total of 10 teams will participate in the Women’s Junior Asia Cup 2024. These teams are—India, Japan, Korea, Thailand, Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and China.

Groups

Group B:  Japan, South Korea, Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong, Sri Lanka

Tournament history

Three teams, including India, have won the title since its inception in 1992. South Korea are the most successful team with record four titles (1992, 1996, 2000, 2008). China (2004, 2012, 2015) and India (2023) are the other two nations to have lifted the championships.

South Korea are the only team to win a hat-trick of titles, having won the first three editions. In the inaugural edition, South Korea defeated China 3-2 in the finals. Korea went on to win the second and third editions as well beating China, who ended as runners-up in three consecutive editions, again in the title matches.

After losing the finals on three occasions, the Chinese team finally overcame the Korean hurdle by defeating them in the 2004 final and stopping them from lifting a fourth consecutive title. Then in 2008, we saw Korea defeating China (2-0) to win a record fourth title.

For the first time, a team other than Korea reached the final in 2012 when India made it to the title clash after finishing third in four of the first five editions. However, India lost the final against China (2-5). China then went on to win their third title in 2015, defeating Japan in a penalty shootout. 2015 was the first time India failed to finish in the top three as they lost to South Korea (2-3) in the bronze medal match.

China failed to qualify for the finals for the first time in 2023 after going down to South Korea in the semifinals. In an India vs Korea tussle for the title, India came out on top 2-1 to win their maiden title.

Tournament format

The tournament will feature 10 teams divided into two groups of five teams each. Each team will play against the other members of its group. At the end of the pool stages, the top two-ranked teams from each group will advance to the semifinals. Teams finishing third and fourth in their groups will compete in the 5th-8th classification matches, while the teams finishing fifth will play in the 9th-10th classification match.
