Indian Sports Calendar August 2024: Major events to look forward to in final week

The Paralympics 2024 starts this week.

As the Olympic excitement winds down, attention now shifts to the upcoming Paralympics 2024, where athletes with disabilities will take center stage in this week’s Indian Sports Calendar.

Following India’s historic performance in Tokyo, expectations are high for the para-athletes to surpass the 30-medal mark, buoyed by their impressive showings in recent World Championships for Athletics, Badminton, and Shooting.Meanwhile, young Indian talent will be on display at the Junior World Athletics Championships. In a new development, India is set to compete in the flag football world cup, a sport recently added to the Olympic program.

The sporting calendar is further packed with Indian athletes participating in Badminton, Squash, Table Tennis, and Tennis events. Capping off the week’s excitement is the start of the US Open, the final grand slam tennis tournament of the year.

Athletics

The U20 World Junior Athletics Championships will start this week with eyes on our young guns. Neeru Pathak, Jay Kumar and Dev Meena are some of the athletes to watch out for. We also have the National Open Athletics Championships in Bangalore

  • August 27-31: World Junior U/20 Athletics Championships
  • August 30-2 September: 63rd National Open Athletics Championships

Badminton

After the Japan Open, the caravan now moves to the Korea Open which is a Super 500 tournament. Many top players have skipped this event as it is after the Olympics.

Flag Football

India will participate in the World Cup for the first time. They are in group G with Israel, Ireland and Denmark

Football

The Durand Cup, one of India’s oldest football tournaments, is nearing its exciting conclusion for 2024. The competition has reached the semifinal stage, with four teams battling for a spot in the final.

In the first semifinal, NorthEast United FC will face Shillong Lajong FC. This match pits two teams from India’s northeast region against each other, promising an intense regional rivalry.

The second semifinal features a clash between two giants of Indian football: Mohun Bagan Super Giant and Bengaluru.

Para Sports

The most awaited event of this week is the Paralympics. India will look to better their Tokyo tally. The main sports for India in which they can grab medals are Archery, Athletics, Shooting and Badminton. Table Tennis, cycling and Rowing also are sports where India can get one medal.

Squash

Ramit Tandon will be the sole Indian to participate in the Egyptian Open. Many Indians will be participating in the home event at Kolkata. The recently crowned national champion Abhay Singh is participating in the Tuanku Muhriz Trophy 2024.

Tennis

The most awaited Tennis event after Wimbledon would be aired this week. The US Open which is the last grand slam of the year will see 4 Indian doubles player and Sumit Nagal in men’s singles.

Table Tennis

The WTT feeder event will take place in Muscat. Many young Indian athletes are participating in this event. The likes of Payas Jain, Kritwika Roy, and Selena Selvakumar will be in action. The Ultimate Table Tennis league is also running which was started the previous week
