India defeated Iran 32-25 in the Asian Women’s Kabaddi Championship 2025 final.

India lifted their fifth Asian Women’s Kabaddi Championship title, defeating Iran 32-25 in the final on Saturday in Tehran, Iran. The Asian Games gold medal-winning Indian women’s team extended their dominance.

This marks two consecutive trophies for India, who also emerged victorious in the previous edition in Gorgan (Iran) in 2017. It is worth noting that the only team, apart from India, with an Asian Women’s Kabaddi Championships trophy in their cabinet is South Korea, who finished at the top of the podium in the 2016 Busan edition.

The sixth edition of the continental competition was held from March 6 to March 8, with seven teams participating. Hangzhou Asian Games silver medallist Chinese Taipei, who withdrew from the tournament ahead of time, was absent from the competition. India was placed in pool A with Bangladesh, Thailand, and Malaysia. Pool B consisted of hosts Iran, Nepal, and Iraq.

The team led by Sonali Shingate maintained dominance from the start and won all their matches. They started with a massive 64-23 victory against Bangladesh and then hammered Thailand 76-21. Another big win against Malaysia by a margin of 73–19 meant they topped Pool A, with three wins in each match and a whopping score difference of +150.

The other pool saw Iran finishing as table toppers with two wins in two, while Nepal qualified for the semifinal and assured themselves of a podium finish (both losing semifinalists are awarded bronze medals) by victory against Iraq. However, they were no match to the might of India in the semifinal, suffering an 18-56 defeat.

The reigning champions take on Iran (who thrashed Bangladesh 41-18 in the other semifinal) in the final: the third such occurrence in six editions. The result too was no different, as India yet again emerged triumphant, by a considerable margin of 32-25. They would be mighty pleased with the effort, considering there were several youngsters present in the squad, along with the stars.

No further details are available regarding the matches since they were played behind closed doors.

The tournament would have acted as a rehearsal ahead of the all-important Women’s Kabaddi World Cup, slated to be held in Bihar in June this year. Teams get a chance to experiment and finalise their combinations, while players also get the necessary playing time.
