India remain the most successful team in women’s kabaddi, winning a fourth gold at Aichi-Nagoya

V. Tejaswini Bai in Guangzhou 2010 and Incheon 2014, Ritu Negi in Hangzhou 2022, and Pushpa Rana at Aichi-Nagoya 2026 all have one thing in common. All four have led India to the Asian Games women’s kabaddi gold medal, making the nation a four-time silverware winner—the most since the sport’s inception.

India had an unbeaten run in their gold-winning campaign in Aichi-Nagoya, as the reigning champions edged past Bangladesh, Iran, and the hosts, Japan, before meeting Nepal in the semi-finals.

After registering a dominating victory in their game against Nepal, the defending champions met the 2018 champions once again in the finals and went on to defeat them to keep their crown.

This was India’s fourth gold since women’s kabaddi’s introduction at the 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games, where India beat Thailand in the finals while the bronze medals were clinched by Bangladesh and Iran.

Across five editions, only two teams have ever won a gold medal at the Asian Games Women’s Kabaddi, and the search for a new winner is extended until 2030.

While the Indian team completely dominated the inaugural edition of the event at the Asian Games 2010 in Guangzhou and the following second edition of the event at Incheon 2014, the two-time champions were stunned by Iran as they went on to claim their maiden gold medal at the Jakarta 2018.

Team India made a comeback again in the Hangzhou 2022 edition, where they beat Chinese Taipei in the finals to claim their third gold medal, followed by their triumph at this year’s edition in Japan’s Aichi Prefecture.

India’s win in Hangzhou was recalled as one of their most memorable comebacks by the then-captain, Ritu Negi, who was also a part of the squad that clinched silver in Jakarta in 2018.

The final in Hangzhou was one of India’s most thrilling encounters, where they triumphed over Chinese Taipei by just a point’s difference.

This year’s gold medal has made them by far the most successful team at the Asian Games women’s kabaddi event, making it 4-1 to Iran’s only success in Jakarta eight years back.
