Pawan Sehrawat nearly retired from Kabaddi before coach Randhir backed him.

Pawan Sehrawat’s story has been nothing less than a Bollywood blockbuster. The Hi-Flyer is now one of the biggest poster boys of the Pro Kabaddi League with 1,318 raid points under his belt, which is the third highest in the PKL history. However, if the Arjuna Award recipient, Randhir Singh Sehrawat didn’t have that inspiring talk with Pawan Sehrawat, he would have been a long-forgotten player instead of being an Arjuna Awardee (2023) and the current India captain.

Sehrawat began his PKL journey as a New Young Player in the third season. It was the Bengaluru Bulls’ coach, Randhir Singh Sehrawat who noticed his talent, and got him drafted as a NYP. Although the coach had a massive belief in him, the first three seasons were nothing less than a disaster for the current Indian captain.

It was then, Sehrawat decided to walk away from the sport, but the coach, Randhir, once again backed him up and gave him that golden opportunity in season 6 to represent the Bengaluru Bulls once again, and the rest is history.

Unlike Pardeep Narwal, Sehrawat didn’t have consistent seasons from the beginning. However, once he started to dominate, he made his mark unshakably as he retained the top raiding points chart for three consecutive seasons and still is pretty intact on the court. Let us have a look at his journey through the seasons of the PKL.

Season 11 (Telugu Titans)

Telugu Titans once again showed their faith in the Hi-Flyer to lead them, and he certainly didn’t disappoint. The last time, Sehrawat was the lone warrior but this season, he got impressive support from his team to take them almost to the playoffs, ending their journey in the seventh position.

Sehrawat unfortunately had a mixed season as he was unavailable for a good chunk of matches due to injury. Sehrawat played 13 matches to score 134 points including 129 raid points and five tackle points. Despite his injury, he didn’t lose his form and got eight Super-10s in the 13 matches that he played.

Season 10 (Telugu Titans)

This was the first year of the Hi-Flyer with the Titans. Sehrawat had an impressive season as an individual but he couldn’t make it reflect in his team’s performance as the Titans finished at the bottom of the table. He scored 217 points in 21 matches including 202 raid points and 15 tackle points. It was another shining season for the Hi-Flyer who scored 13 Super-10s with a success rate of 51.13%.

Season 9 (Tamil Thalaivas)

Tamil Thalaivas included the unstoppable Pawan Sehrawat, who had crushed his opponents in the last 3 seasons, in their team and appointed him captain as well. However, the decision didn’t turn out as they wanted. Sehrawat remained out for the season due to a knee injury that he suffered in the first match itself and was able to play just one match scoring one point in the two raids he performed.

Season 8 (Bengaluru Bulls)

Pawan Sehrawat played his last season with the team where it all started. He led the Bengaluru Bulls for the first time in the PKL and was able to lead them into the semifinals where they were defeated by Dabang Delhi (40-35). Sehrawat was yet again exceptional this season and scored 320 points in 24 matches including 304 raid points with a success raid percentage of 63.59%.

Moreover, he also supported the team in defence with 16 tackle points. The Hi-Flyer once again recorded 18 Super-10s in season 8 and was unmatched yet again.

Season 7 (Bengaluru Bulls)

The Hi-Flyer flew high this season as well. It was the second time in a row that he starred immaculately. Sehrawat nearly broke Pardeep Narwal’s record of 369 raid points in one season. Sehrawat scored 360 points in season 7 out of which 346 were raid points with a success rate of 75.05% and 14 tackle points.

The superstar recorded 18 Super-10s this season including a stupendous record of scoring 39 raid points in a single match against the Haryana Steelers, which seems nearly unbreakable.

Season 6 (Bengaluru Bulls)

This is the season where Pawan Sehrawat was roped back into the Bengaluru Bulls by the coach Randhir Singh Sehrawat. After having a series of disastrous seasons, Sehrawat stood out for the first time in Season 6. He took the opportunity with open hands and scored 282 points including 271 raid points with a success raid percentage of 72.26% and was named the Most Valuable Player of the season. He recorded 13 Super-10s this season and the world saw the rise of the mammoth raider.

Season 5 (Gujarat Giants)

Pawan’s dark patch continued. Gujarat Giants included Pawan Sehrawat in their squad this season. Back then, Sehrawat wasn’t a Hi-Flyer. After enduring two poor seasons, Sehrawat joined the Giants but once again it turned out to be unsuccessful. In season 5, Sehrawat featured in nine matches and was able to score just 10 points including nine raid and one tackle point.

Season 4 (Bengaluru Bulls)

Season 4 was another nightmare for Pawan Sehrawat. It was the second season of his career, and his performance declined dramatically. He scored 11 points in 10 matches with a success rate percentage of 33.33%.

Season 3 (Bengaluru Bulls)

The debut season of the Hi-Flyer. Sehrawat was introduced as a NYP this season by Randhir Singh Sehrawat and the Bulls. Singh saw a lot of potential in Sehrawat and gave him this opportunity and he had a decent season as a newbie. Sehrawat scored 53 points in 13 matches including 45 raid points with a success rate of 40.9% and also supported the defence with 8 tackle points.

Pawan Sehrawat is an example that the first impression can certainly be changed with a lot of hard work and persistence. After having a series of disastrous seasons, he turned his career with an astonishing comeback to become the Hi-Flyer, a strong kabaddi player who also went on to lead the Indian team later.
