National Games 2023: Jyothi Yarraji, Tejas Shirse breach meet records to win hurdles gold

The 37th National Games 2023, hosted in Goa for the first time, has brought together athletes from 28 states, eight Union Territories, and the Services Sports Control Board. The track and field competitions, a highlight of these Games, commenced on the evening of October 29, featuring thrilling finals in high jump, 5000m and 100m sprints for both men and women, and the 10000m race adding even more excitement to the mix.

As we approach the event's conclusion on November 3 at the G.M.C Athletic Stadium, Bambolim, anticipation for the upcoming events is building.

On the second day of athletics at the 37th National Games, the competition heated up with a series of finals. Athletes showcased their skills in a range of events, including the 20 km race walk for both men and women, the 110m hurdles and 100m hurdles for men and women, the 400m finals, and the 1500m finals for both men and women. Additionally, the shot put finals for women and long jump final for men added further excitement to the day's proceedings.

400m Men and Women Results

The 400m events at the 37th National Games witnessed remarkable performances from both men and women. In the women's category, Vithya Ramraj of Tamil Nadu clinched the gold medal with an impressive time of 52.85 seconds, leaving her competitors, Jyotikasri D of Andhra Pradesh and Kerala's Jisna Mathew, to take home the silver and bronze medals, respectively.

In the men's division, K. Avinash, also representing Tamil Nadu, secured the gold by a narrow margin, edging past Haryana's Vikrant Panchal. Maharashtra's Rahul Ramesh Kadam secured the bronze medal.

100m Women's Hurdles and 110m Men's Hurdles Final

Asian Games medallist Jyothi Yarraji and Tejas Shirse both shattered National Games records to secure gold medals. Jyothi broke her own record in the 100m hurdles with a time of 13.22 seconds.

Meanwhile, Tejas, who had previously rewritten the games record in the heats with a time of 13.80 seconds in the morning, further improved his performance in the 110m hurdles finals by clocking in at 13.71 seconds.

20 km Race Walk for Men and Women

In the men's category, Suraj Panwar from Uttarakhand secured the gold medal with a time of 1:27:43. SSCB's Servin earned the silver medal with a timing of 1:41:13 while Hardeep from Haryana clinched the bronze in 1:42:24.

The women's 20 km walk also witnessed record-breaking feats as Priyanka Goswami set a new games record with a time of 1:36:35, surpassing the previous record held by Munita Prajapati, who won the bronze medal. Sejal Anil Singh from Maharashtra secured the silver medal with a time of 1:41:13.

1500m

In the women's category, Lili Das from West Bengal clinched the gold medal as she crossed the finish line ahead of her fellow international athlete, K.M. Chanda from Delhi. On the men's side, Ritesh Ohre of Madhya Pradesh secured the gold with an impressive time of 3:40.93 seconds.

Field Events

In the Long Jump Men Final, Muhammed Anees of Kerala soared to victory and secured the gold medal with an incredible jump of 8.15 meters. Abha Khatua of Maharashtra delivered a powerful performance in the Women's Shot Put event to win the gold medal with an impressive throw of 17.09 meters.
