National Games 2023: Tejaswin Shankar sets Games' record in decathlon, Ancy Sojan wins gold in women's long jump

Jyothi Yarraji anchored Andhra Pradesh to women’s 4x100m relay gold, while Tamil Nadu took the men’s title.

The 37th edition of the National Games unfolded its third day of track and field events on October 31 at Bambolim Athletics Stadium in Goa. The day was marked by intense competition as athletes from across the nation vied for the podium in a series of gripping finals. The men’s pole vault final, the women’s and men’s 4x100m relay finals, the women’s javelin throw finals, the women’s long jump final and the decathlon final took center stage in the schedule of events in National Games 2023 on Tuesday.

Tejaswin Shankar’s performance in the decathlon was the highlight of the day as the Asian Games silver medalist left an indelible mark by shattering the year-old meet record. He achieved a remarkable total of 7199 points surpassing the previous games record of 7121.

Ancy Sojan, yet another Asian Games silver medalist clinched the women’s long jump gold in a thrilling showdown against her fellow Kerala athlete Nayana James. The margin between them was a mere one centimeter with Ancy achieving a distance of 6.53 meters and Nayana closely behind at 6.52 meters. Moumita Mondal from West Bengal secured the third place with a jump of 6.41 meters.

The women’s 4x100m relay gold was secured by the Andhra Pradesh team with Jyothi Yarraji as their anchor recording an impressive time of 45.61 seconds. Following closely behind was Kerala and Karnataka who claimed the second and third positions with timings of 46.02 and 46.22 seconds, respectively.

Meanwhile , the men’s 4x100m relay was triumphantly seized by the Tamil Nadu team achieving a time of 40.05 seconds and narrowly edging out Odisha and Kerala who crossed the line in 40.13 and 40.14 seconds, respectively.

The start list included the name of Asian Games champion Annu Rani although she did not participate in the competition and Shilpa Rani of Haryana clinched the gold in the women’s javelin throw event with a performance of 54.82m.
