Fernandes had previously been an interim player-cum-coach for the Goan side.
Vasco SC have appointed renowned Goan player Micky Fernandes as their new head coach for the upcoming season. Fernandes has been associated with the club both as a player and coach, but will now take up a bigger responsibility to bring back their long-lost success. Fernandes is a renowned figure in Goan football having played for the likes of Dempo, Salgaocar and Churchill Brothers in his career and he will look to put his expertise to use as Vasco's head coach.
Vasco have been in a bit of turmoil recently and have not been able to compete well in the Goa Professional League, having finished at the eighth position last season. They last played in the 2nd Division I-League back in 2013, when they finished at the third place and have not competed in any of the Indian top leagues since. Fernandes, having played in the I-League for many seasons, will be hoping to take them into the premier division of Indian football and prove his astute knowledge of the game.
The former India International seems to be delighted to have been given the opportunity to manage a club of Vasco's stature and is really enthusiastic about working with the players. He spoke exclusively to Khel Now's Goa correspondent Ravish Narvekar about getting the new role and said, "I am extremely happy to be the Head Coach of Vasco. Last season, I was the assist coach-cum-player with them, but this season I have greater responsibilities."
"Last season we finished eighth with five wins, five draws and 12 losses. So, my target is to improve the performance of the team and finish at the highest level this season," he added.
Fernandes knows the limitations of the club, but seems to be optimistic about the new season knowing how talented his players are. He said, "Since the budget of the club is very tight, I will have to build the team wisely, but that doesn't mean we will have a weak side."
"I have a few players on my radar, plus we have retained five players from the last season. So, basically I want to build a balanced team which can deliver what I want from them." he further explained.
Vasco SC have seen a disappointing decline in form over the past few seasons, but Fernandes will look to overturn their fortunes after taking over the new role. Vasco will look to improve the mood of their fans with better, more attractive football in the GPL next season and will be vying for the very top after the state league kicks-off in a few months time.
